E84 2-Ply 20oz OSNA
Report of Testing "20 oz. vinyl wall covering with fabric backing" for compliance with the applicable safety requirements.
OSNA fabric backing technology combines the benefits of traditional fabric substrates with modern adhesive innovations. This construction method creates wallcovering with enhanced adhesion properties and improved installation characteristics while maintaining the textile-like qualities that make fabric-backed materials popular in upscale commercial applications. The 20-ounce weight ensures commercial-grade performance in demanding environments.
Fire safety testing for fabric-backed materials requires careful evaluation because textile fibers and adhesive components can behave differently than other wallcovering substrates when exposed to flame. The ASTM E84 test protocol exposes materials to controlled fire conditions and measures both flame spread rate and smoke production to ensure compliance with building code requirements for commercial interior applications.
Architects and designers can specify OSNA fabric-backed wallcoverings with confidence in their fire safety performance. This certification provides the documentation needed to satisfy building code requirements and ensures that material selections support project approvals without fire safety-related delays or complications.
Test Specifications
Report of Testing “20 oz. vinyl wall covering with fabric backing” for compliance with the applicable requirements of the following criteria: ASTM E84-16 TEST FOR SURFACE BURNING CHARACTERISTICS OF BUILDING MATERIALS (UL 723, UBC 8-1, NFPA 255)
Specimen Description:
The specimen was prepared by Intertek technicians on March 31, 2017 at Intertek Laboratories located in Elmendorf, TX. The specimen was described by the client as “Lot 189682”. The 24 ft. long test specimen consisted of three 8 ft. sections of wall covering material adhered to 1/4 in. thick cement board. The product was received by our personnel in good condition and given an identification number of SAT1703141139-001.
Mounting Method:
The specimen was self-supporting. The finished side was exposed towards the flames.
Test Results
The test results, computed on the basis of observed flame front advance and electronic smoke density measurements are presented in the following table.
Test Specimen | Flame Spread Index | Smoke Developed Index |
---|---|---|
20 oz. vinyl wall covering with fabric backing | 20 | 95 |
Observations
During the test, the specimen was observed to behave in the following manner.
Time (min:sec) | Observations |
---|---|
0:00 | The test burners were turned on. |
0:11 | The wall covering began to blister |
0:13 | The wall covering began to melt. |
0:14 | Steady ignition was observed. |
0:51 | The wall covering began to flake. |
0:53 | Small burning chunks began to fall. |
10:00 | The test burners were shut off. |
After the test, the specimen was observed to be damaged as follows:
Distance (feet) | Damage |
---|---|
0-7 | The wall covering was observed to be consumed. |
7-10 | The wall covering was observed to be partially melted and heavily charred. |
10-24 | The wall covering was observed to be heavily discolored and blistered. |
