Foil stamping is the application of metallic foil, often gold or silver, but can also be various colors and patterns.
A heated die is stamped onto the foil, making it adhere to the surface leaving the design on the paper. Foil stamping machines, also known as hot foil stampers, use heat to transfer metallic foil to a solid surface.
Examples of items that are foil stamped include business cards, stationery, wedding and bar mitzvahs invitations, napkins, photographs and
book covers
Foil stamping can be combined with embossing to create a more striking 3D image. I have often included foil on certain invitations where it was not originally requested, but after seeing the sample proof and how much the piece was enhanced, the foil is always added to the final piece.
