Gorgeous Chalk Typography by Dana Tanamachi

Posted on October 22, 2013

Dana Tanamachi is a Brooklyn artist with an uncanny eye for typography. Her medium of choice is also quite the throwback as far as typeface designers are concerned. Good, old-fashioned chalk - that's all Dana needs to conjure the essence of the late 1800's to the mid 1900's in vibrant scripts, serifs and sans-serifs. She demonstrates full mastery of practically every style imaginable in these elaborate and totally improvised murals. Very little, if any planning goes into many of these works. Dana describes her process in the video after the jump:

"I just go for it, right on the wall. I start out sketching extremely loosely, then figure out what works and tighten it up. The process is really not mathematical at all. It's purely visual. For the most part everything I do is a mixture of what's already in my head. I just figure out as I go what is going to balance the composition best."
